Talent and Success

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.Calvin Coolidge

The department of Education, Sports and youth recently held a talent search in Marsabit County which left us amazed. We saw singers, dancers, acrobats, artists (Sketch artists who could draw some of the most accurate representations of famous personalities you’ve ever seen) and our own sikulangi artists singing along to the tunes of Mude and Jirma.

Some were downright awesome, some obnoxious, one guy could move his shoulder blades in and out like two horns sticking out of his back, you’d have to see it to get the full implication, a dance group which could rival some of the best on Sarakasi, performances by singers who had the whole crowd on their feet dancing and cheering, amongst others. Some were lewd like the young girls shaking their behinds on stage like on some videos Jamaican artists ……..chalk it off to the new generation or lack of proper parenting, anyway I digress.

The point is that Marsabit Iko talent. I was very impressed by the range and immensity of talent displayed.

Nevertheless, talent without dedication and serious commitment amounts to nothing. We’ve all heard stories of people who were very talented at something but amounted to nothing in life. That is the case with a lot of people in Marsabit. What went wrong you may ask? A picture comes to my mind of two people digging for gold. One gave up merely two feet from the goal. The other kept on digging despite the hard work and finally reaped the benefits of his efforts. Other factors may be drug abuse which is a rampant problem in Marsabit with the constant and pervasive chewing of the green leaves, miraa.

One of the most famous sports personalities in the country, Julius Yego, refined his skills in javelin throwing by watching YouTube videos. That earned him the nickname The YouTube Athlete and a number of accolades. He was that determined and persistent and it paid off. No matter how limiting our environment is there are always ways of improvising and overcoming challenges. Believe in your dreams.

However, there are points beyond which one needs assistance. We need better sports facilities, a library to expand the scope of imagination of our youth, more events to explore and aid in enhancing and nurturing our talent. We need parents who give better guidance and are a better example to their young.

Moreover, we need better education for the children of Marsabit County. In all honesty, the state of most of our learning institutions is pathetic. Knowing that we build our character and personality in our early and late teens, something urgently needs to be done to remedy the state of these institutions. No matter how much of a cliché it sounds, education really is one of the keys to success.

To the youth of Marsabit County, be doggedly persistent in all your pursuits, smile at every inch of progress you make and one day you will succeed.
