Patients and families in Marsabit County are in dire need of palliative care.

Palliative care is a key area that our health services seem to have completely overlooked for so many years.Palliative care is an interdisciplinary approach to specialized medical and nursing care for people with life-limiting illnesses. It focuses on providing relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress at any stage of illness.Palliative care should be a key part of Marsabit County government’s health strategy and should be allocated the necessary resources to develop capacity for this critical service of health care.

As we are all well aware so many people in Marsabit county suffer from long term conditions such as diabetes, Kidney Failure and Cancer among others.  Apart from the medications that are used to manage this conditions it is also imperative that the patient families are given all the support/counselling services they desperately need as they care for their loved ones.

Individuals with some of these chronic conditions suffer unbearable pain that only very specific types of highly regulated anticipatory medications can help. Unfortunately so many people in Marsabit county continue to suffer and eventually succumb to an undignified death.

I would suggest that The County Government of Marsabit considers setting up special centres for patients with chronic conditions. Such centres should then be fully equipped so as to provide the comfort and care that patients need in the last days of their life. We should all strive to give such patients the best care and love during the last moments of their life and finally a dignified death that is without pain, full of love and comfort.

We must not forget that family members of such individuals go through so much social economic and mental anguish as they look after their loved ones and as a result they  develop post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) hence any plans for such a facility and for individuals sufferig from chronic ailments must also take into account psyco-social and other related support services for their families.

Palliative care does not mean that the death is imminent because one can live for years as long as the symptoms are managed appropriately.
