Today, Marsabit County Governor H.E Mohamud .M. Ali hosted five envoys from Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, UK, The Netherlands, UN resident coordinator,EU representative, the principal secretary from the ministry of devolution & planning and other development partners. The team is on a tour mission of the frontier counties of Mandera, Garrisa, Isiolo, Marsabit, Tana River ,Turkana and Lamu which have formed a regional economic block, FCDC (frontier counties development council) and is geared at leveraging the opportunities considering geographic proximities in addressing shared developmental challenges. The familiarization visit is aimed at providing FCDC counties with the opportunity to articulate key regional development priorities, establish development partner-GOK compact and to strengthen FCDC as a platform for member counties to achieve socioeconomic development.
Governor Ali acknowledged the long term generous support from the embassies and recognized with deep appreciation the continuous support from various development partners to Marsabit county as well as other FCDC counties. While regretting the level of inequality across the frontier counties, he underscored lack of various development enablers in these counties
“You must have realized the high level of inequality between frontier counties and the rest of Kenya. You must have seen that in all the frontier counties you visited, infrastructures such as roads,energy,water and other basic enablers of development are either lacking or inadequate” Said Governor Ali.
While acknowledging the enormous challenges the county is facing in exploiting its untapped natural resources, Governor Ali called for proper attention, understanding of its needs,potential and political commitment to address them. The county boss further called for utmost collaboration and cooperation with donors and other development partners in the key sectors of Education, Health,Roads, Livestock and Agriculture so as to keep FCDC counties at par with vision 2030 and the rest of the country.
The envoys lauded Governor Ali’s development track record and in particular, the healthcare sector where the county government have secured NHIF cover for 10,000 vulnerable households,free ambulance services, cost sharing of major surgeries and the radical reforms he brought at NHIF as the board chairman. World bank have also promised to partner with FCDC counties on solar energy, water and sanitation, response for displacement persons and safety net programs . Further the bank has urged Governor Ali to put in place urban/municipal board and city managers that will oversee the management of the Ksh. 750M that they will pump in 5 phases for town urbanization.
The Principal secretary, ministry of devolution Mr. Micah Powon assured the FCDC counties of continued support from national government and timely release of funds.
